HFC and the University of Michigan-Dearborn will host a “Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Peace Rally Political Poster-Making Workshop” from 11:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. on Thursday, January 23 in the Rosenau Rooms on the first floor of the Andrew A. Mazzara Administrative Services & Conference Center (ASCC) (Building L on the main campus).

Local artist Donna Jackson will facilitate this workshop, which is open to students and employees of both HFC and UM-Dearborn.

“I invite you to join me for this workshop, where we’ll explore the incredible potential of posters as a tool for communication and change,” said Jackson. “Posters have always fascinated me because they can do something conversation often cannot – give people a moment to pause, visually take in a perspective, and perhaps understand or consider a message they hadn’t before. This belief has driven my work, including curating exhibitions like ‘Tolerance,’ a global project created by artist-activist Mirko Ilić.”

Posters have the power to amplify voices

An alumna of Western Michigan University and the College for Creative Studies, Jackson – the founder of DMJStudio – was the curator of “Posters on Politics,” a collection of political and philosophical posters created by artists from around the world that was displayed in 2021 at The Charles H. Wright Museum of African American History in Detroit. This collection showcased artwork depicting police brutality, social justice, women’s rights, and American politics.

“In this workshop, I’ll share my passion for posters by diving into their rich history and their use in activism here in America and around the world. Posters, whether made with simple markers or designed by renowned artists, have the power to amplify voices, spark change, and connect us to the global stories we live within,” said Jackson. “We’ll also roll up our sleeves for a hands-on session where you’ll create your own poster. To inspire your work, I’ll bring in a selection of posters from my personal collection, showcasing the breadth and impact of this art form.”

Create your own posters as a tool for expression

During this workshop, representatives from student organizations at both educational institutions will speak. HFC sociology instructor and BMQFG faculty advisor Dr. Kalvin DaRonne Harvell will give the closing remarks.

Join us to learn about the powerful history of protest art and create your own posters as a tool for expression!

Lunch will be provided. Attendance is free and open for HFC and UM-Dearborn students and employees, as well as the general public.
