HFC and the University of Michigan-Dearborn will celebrate the 32nd annual Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Day of Service by giving back to the community on Monday, January 20, 2025.

The MLK Day of Service is a one-day outreach activity that commemorates the philosophy and legacy of the renowned civil rights icon Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Students, faculty, and staff from both institutions will volunteer to help local agencies.

OPTION 1: Off-campus service opportunities

In-person volunteer options:

OPTION 2: On-campus service opportunities

Please check in at Kochoff Hall in the James C. Renick University Center where there will be a morning kick-off at 9:00 a.m. and opportunities to register for in-person volunteer opportunities on the UM-Dearborn campus:

  • 10:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m.: Kids Coalition Against Hunger
  • 10:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m.: Assembling hygiene kits for the homeless
  • 10:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m.: Project Sunshine
  • 10:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m.: Assembling chew toys for dogs that will be donated to local animal shelters
  • 11:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m.: The Student Food Pantry
  • 10:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m.: Pollinator Hotel Workshop, where you will build hotels for bees
  • 11:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m.: Library archiving at the Mardigian Library
  • 10:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m.: Tote bag upcycling, where you will recycle T-shirts into tote bags

OPTION 3: Remote service opportunities

The following remote service opportunities can be completed at your home, where you will need to provide materials for these activities:

  • Creating greeting cards
  • Assembling chew toys for dogs
  • Fleece blanket-making

Whatever activity you choose, directions will be sent to you as the Day of Service approaches. Join us and make a difference on MLK Day!
