3 Hawks volleyball players earn MCCAA Eastern Conference Honorable Mention
Three Hawks volleyball players earned Michigan Community College Athletic Association (MCCAA) Eastern Conference Honorable Mention for the season:
- Sophomore Skylar Piper, of Westland
- Freshman Katya Salame, of Dearborn
- Freshman Djene Sy, of Oak Park
Coach Kija Chambers, who is in her third season as head coach, expressed how proud she is of her players’ accomplishments.
“Skylar Piper is a two-year captain and was a great leader on and off the court! She worked hard to achieve this award. Katya Salame was a lights out hitter for the Hawks! She found ways to utilize her hitter’s toolbox to score points. Djene Sy was a strong presence in the front row. Other teams always had to know where she was,” said Chambers.
Salame is the first Henry Ford Early College student to compete on a varsity team at HFC.
“I'm grateful to Coach Chambers and Assistant Coach Arielle Fox for their persistence and advocacy for me. I am grateful for this opportunity that allowed me to continue playing the game that I love,” said Salame.
In December, Piper will graduate from HFC and earn her medical receptionist certificate. Her plans after graduation include working at Henry Ford Health in Detroit as a clinical service representative while trying to find a job coaching volleyball. Her long-term plans include returning to HFC and enrolling in the radiographer program.
“I have been playing volleyball for eight years, and playing at HFC has been an amazing opportunity!” said Piper. “The environment that the coaches put together is like no other. The bonds that we have created are like a family, and I am so thankful to have been a part of that. Although it can be challenging as a student athlete, I always looked forward to going to practice or a game every day because it was enjoyable and pushed me to be the best version of myself.”
