HFC Detroit Promise hosts the Promise Experience 2024
The Detroit Promise at HFC will host the Promise Experience 2024 on Monday, August 19, from 9:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. on the first floor of the Andrew A. Mazzara Administrative Services & Conference Center (ASCC) (Building L on the main campus).
“The Promise Experience at HFC is a community kickoff event for our Detroit Promise scholars. This event is designed to provide motivation, resources, and a sense of community. This event will also serve as an opportunity to introduce or reintroduce our scholars to the Detroit Promise at HFC. We have been doing some amazing program building, and we look forward to sharing all of the great new things with our scholars,” said Detroit Promise Program Coordinator Mark Yancy, Jr..
George Rice III gives keynote speech
The Detroit Promise 2024’s keynote speaker is George Rice III, the Chief Empowerment Officer (CEO) and Head Coach of Triple Threat Enterprises, LLC in Washington, D.C. Rice has more than 20 years of experience as a basketball coach, educator, and motivational speaker. He established his reputation working in the public school system, the nonprofit sector, and higher education. Rice’s mission is simple: To encourage, challenge, prepare, and empower young people to be the leaders of today by preparing them to become triple threats in their everyday lives and effectively “Rebound for Success” (his motto).
A native of Toledo, OH, Rice earned his bachelor’s degree in psychology from Morehouse College. He earned his master’s degree in counseling from Bowling Green State University.
“We met George while attending a conference in Tampa, FL this past March,” said Yancy. “His was one of the best sessions at that conference. We found him personable, charismatic, interactive, and energetic.”
Monica Marie Jones as a workshop leader
Monica Marie Jones will serve as a workshop leader at the Promise Experience 2024. Jones is a national trainer and field consultant for the David P. Weikart Center for Youth Program Quality in her native Detroit. Her experience includes designing professional development content in the areas of positive youth development, social and emotional learning, trauma-informed care, restorative practices, small business development, organizational development, and personal development.
Jones wrote the following books: Souls of Our Young Sisters: The Next Generation of Women Tell Their Stories, The Ups and Downs of Being Round, and Swag. She has contributed to Chicken Soup for the Girl’s Soul: Real Stories by Real Girls About Real Stuff.
Jones is also a quality coach with the Youth Driven Spaces Immersion Program at the Neutral Zone Teen Center in Ann Arbor. Early in her career, she was a teacher and after-school program director. She earned her bachelor’s degree in elementary education from Eastern Michigan University and her master’s degree in social work from the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor.
“Monica is another amazing facilitator,” said Yancy. “The way she leads her sessions is truly an experience. She is able to motivate and inspire in a very practical way while getting participants to truly look inside themselves.”

What is the Detroit Promise?
Founded in 2016, Detroit Promise is a tuition-free college program, ensuring that any student graduating from any high school in Detroit proper will have a tuition-free path to an associate degree or technical certificate. The City of Detroit pays for tuition and fees, as long as all requirements are met.
Detroit Promise is administered by the Detroit Regional Chamber of Commerce in partnership with colleges like HFC, a proud participant since the beginning. The College has the largest number of Detroit Promise students of any community college in the state. HFC follows the Applebaum Family Campus Coach model, which ensures students will have an individual campus success coach to ensure their academic success.
Each Detroit Promise student will receive a monthly stipend of $50 and will be connected to a community of Detroit Promise scholars. Detroit Promise arranges last-dollar funding for eligible students to cover the costs of tuition and mandatory fees. This means that any Pell or Tuition Incentive Program (TIP) funding must be applied to a student’s tuition and fees first.
