Collection of caps and lids in a bag and container.

With the help of the HFC community, two members of Sustainable HFC, Nancy Knick and Sara Gonzalez-Herrera, have collected more than 900 pounds of clean plastic bottlecaps and lids in 25 compost bags, which will be recycled to create benches for HFC’s main campus.

There are enough caps and lids to create four benches (approximately six feet in length). It will take 200 pounds of caps and lids to produce a bench. Sustainable HFC needs about 100 additional pounds to complete a fifth bench. This is the last call to donate clean caps and lids. The collection will end at the close of business on Friday, May 31.

This has been an on-campus and off-campus collaboration. Last fall, HFC Pre-Education Program Director Dr. Carolyn Casale informed Mariam Hamid’s 4th-grade class at William Ford Elementary School about Sustainable HFC’s plan to recycle caps and lids into benches on HFC’s main campus. Hamid’s students collected thousands of caps and lids in three compost bags filled to the brim.

Knick and Gonzalez-Herrera encourage HFC team members and their families to collect caps and lids. You can drop them off at the following locations:

  • The first floor of the Welcome Center (Building WC on the main campus).
  • The blue drop-off container on the first floor of the Science Building (Building J on the main campus), next to the battery recycling container.

Please note: The Welcome Center is only accessible to vehicle traffic through SME Drive. Please follow these directions for access and parking.
