As the new academic kicks into high gear, the Learning Lab is hosting study skills workshops to help you become a more successful student.

All workshops will be held in Room A-121 of the Learning Lab (Building A on the main campus) and will be streamed on Zoom

HFC biology instructor Hollie Tugwell is coordinating the workshops. Each workshop stands alone, so you can attend any or all of them.


Pre-Nursing: HESI reading and vocabulary preparation

This interactive student workshop offers tips and strategies for pre-nursing students to discover effective methods for scoring well on the reading sections of nursing school admissions tests like the HESI Admission Assessment Exam. This workshop will be held:

  • 1:15 to 3:00 p.m., Tuesday, September 3
  • 1:15 to 3:00 p.m., Wednesday, September 11
  • 1:15 to 3:00 p.m., Tuesday, September 17
  • 1:15 to 3:00 p.m., Wednesday, September 25

Organizing your time as a college student

This workshop offers tips and strategies for you to practice effective time management while attending college. You can create a study schedule that fits your lifestyle. This workshop will be held:

  • 1:15 to 3:00 p.m., Wednesday, September 4
  • 1:15 to 3:00 p.m., Tuesday, September 10
  • 1:15 to 3:00 p.m., Tuesday, October 15
  • 1:15 to 3:00 p.m., Wednesday, October 16
  • 1:15 to 3:00 p.m., Tuesday, November 12
  • 1:15 to 3:00 p.m., Wednesday, November 13

How to study for college science courses

This study skills workshop focuses on proven effective study methods for college science courses. It offers tips on navigating your textbook and online study resources, including Pearson’s Mastering A&P and Pearson’s Mastering Biology. This workshop will be held:

  • 1:15 to 3:00 p.m., Wednesday, September 18
  • 1:15 to 3:00 p.m., Tuesday, September 24
  • 1:15 to 3:00 p.m., Tuesday, October 22
  • 1:15 to 3:00 p.m., Wednesday, October 23
  • 1:15 to 3:00 p.m., Tuesday, November 19
  • 1:15 to 3:00 p.m., Wednesday, November 20

Mock lab practical exam for BIO 233 students

Tugwell will proctor mock lab exams to help BIO 233: Anatomy and Physiology I students prepare for the lab practical experience. Tugwell will coordinate the number of questions and the layout of the exam.

Learning Lab staff will direct the flow of traffic. We recommend that you register.

This workshop will be in the Biology Room, also called the Bone Room (Room A-201), in the Learning Lab on Friday, September 20, from 1:00 to 4:00 p.m.


Metacognition: remembering and retaining

This study skills workshop introduces metacognition, which is awareness and understanding of your own thought processes. Metacognition is a necessary process in which you explore methods proven to be effective for learning and retaining new information. This workshop will be held

  • 1:15 to 3:00 p.m., Tuesday, October 29
  • 1:15 to 3:00 p.m., Wednesday, October 30

  • 1:15 to 3:00 p.m., Wednesday, November 27

Test taking strategies: multiple choice tests

This study skills workshop offers tips that may help students score higher on multiple choice tests in their classes and on common standardized entrance exams. This workshop will be held:

  • 1:15 to 3:00 p.m., Wednesday, October 9
  • 1:15 to 3:00 p.m., Tuesday, November 5
  • 1:15 to 3:00 p.m., Wednesday, November 6
  • 1:15 to 3:00 p.m., Tuesday, December 3
  • 1:15 to 3:00 p.m., Wednesday, December 4
