The HFC Black Male and Quintessential Unique Essence of Ebony Necessary Sisters (QUEENS) Focus Group will host its fourth annual “Excellence of the Black Woman Conference” on Friday, Nov. 15, from 8:30 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. on the first floor of the Andrew A. Mazzara Administrative Services & Conference Center (ASCC) (Building L on the main campus).

This year’s conference theme is, “The Execution of Excellence Through Thought and Action.” This is a statement of purpose that challenges participants to reimagine the procedural and intellectual limitations imposed by some conferences. Conferences are sometimes used as exercises of intellectual frivolity rather than as problem-solving, community-building spaces for information-gathering, growth, and production. Focusing on the importance of applying knowledge, this year’s conference will be centered on the liberatory praxis of critical thought-informed production.

Challenging the traditional conference model

The objective of this year’s conference is intentionally designed to create ideological and material demonstration of what participants learn throughout the day. At the end of the day, attendees will present what they have learned from the session to the large group. The objective is to strive for articulation, development, and implementation of meaningful strategies and deliberately sustainable programs to address the challenges that are identified in each plenary session.

“This year's conference is about execution. More than listening to lectures, participants will be asked to assess what they learn during plenary sessions and report to the large group how they will use this knowledge to navigate their (academic, employment, relationship conflicts) journey. This year's conference is a challenge to the traditional conference model that views participants as objects rather than subjects with agency,” explained BMQFG faculty advisor Dr. Kalvin DaRonne Harvell.
