Screening of documentary “Cross Culture and Religion: Indian Christians in America”
The HFC Council of World Cultures (CWC) presents Cross Culture and Religion: Indian Christians in America, followed by a Q&A with writer-producer Dr. Arifa Javed, on Tuesday, November 12, at 12:30 p.m. via Zoom.
This documentary shares a personal narrative about Indian Christians living in the United States and explores how a unique combination of race, religion, and culture can shape their identity. Aimed at a global audience, Cross Culture and Religion intends to promote an understanding of how these dynamics can influence and transform identities within American society.
About Dr. Arifa Javed
In 1995, Javed immigrated to the U.S. from India. She is a sociology professor and documentary filmmaker who teaches at Eastern Michigan University. Previously, she taught at Wayne State University and the University of Michigan-Dearborn. Javed has completed four documentaries depicting the cultural diversity in Michigan.
Social dynamics and cultural issues are the focus of Javed’s research. She works extensively with immigrants of varied ethnic backgrounds in the U.S., including Arabic, Bosnian, Bangladeshi, Chaldean, Pakistani, and Indian immigrant families. Her research interests include areas of social transformation, focusing on the interplay of faith, race, and culture in the formation of one’s social identity.
