Mirror News wins 9 awards at MPA Better Newspaper Contest

The Michigan Press Association (MPA) has awarded The Mirror News – HFC’s student-run newspaper – nine awards at this year’s Better Newspaper Contest.
The Mirror News staff won individual awards in the following categories:
- First Place in the Division 3 Editorial Category: Arlana Cain-Harris for “Honoring Dr. Daher”
- First Place in the Division 3 Non-Front Page Design Category: Keana Freeman for “The New Black Vanguard: Photography between Art and Fashion"
- Second Place in the Division 3 Investigative Reporting Category: Molly Mullen for “Local Animal Shelters Face Serious Crisis”
- Second Place in the Division 3 Sports News/Features Category: Lillian Grantham for “Athletic Training is Concern for Some Athletes”
- Second Place in the Division 3 Best Writer Category: Tyler Stewart for “‘Squid Game’ Shows Audiences Want More Diverse Asian Representation”, “Natural Organic Reduction: Taking a Dirt Nap for the Planet”, and “Artfully Remaking Horror: ‘Suspiria’ is a Dance Worth Watching Twice"
- Third Place in the Division 3 Best Writer Category: Lillian Grantham for “‘Don't Look Up’ Reflects Current Social Divides”, “Detroit Zoo’s First Female Director Shares Summer Plans”, and “‘From Burundi to Baobab Fare: Restaurant Owner Shares His Journey to Detroit”
- Honorable Mention in the Division 3 Sports News/Features Category: Zynab Al-Timimi for “Hawks Men's Basketball Rebounds after Rough Start”
- Honorable Mention in the Division 3 Column, Review, or Blog Sports Category: Lillian Grantham for “Hawks Softball looks to draw on championship season”
- Honorable Mention in the Division 3 Editorial Category: Anthony Stone for “The Power of Networking”
HFC English instructor Dr. Peter Kim, who serves as the faculty advisor of The Mirror News, is proud of his students.
