HFC’s newest Admissions Recruiter Angie Jones tries to live by a three-word mantra.

“Execute. Hustle. Grind,” said Jones. “I apply those words to my job and to my life.”

Dedicated to a positive attitude and enthusiasm

The youngest of four, Jones was born in Detroit and lives in Dearborn Heights with David, her husband of five years, and their daughter. An alumna of Central High School in Detroit, she attended Marygrove College, where she earned her bachelor’s degree in graphic design and her teaching certificate. At Marygrove, she was a support specialist who worked with students, and a lead resident assistant. She studied abroad in Italy for a year during her time at Marygrove. Jones later earned two master’s degrees from Grand Canyon University: educational leadership, and higher education and student affairs.

Jones joined HFC in October. Her primary duty is recruiting high school students to enroll and start their education at HFC. This includes traveling to high schools and college fairs to recruit future Hawks, getting their input about what they expect from their college experience and their future career and educational goals. Her supervisor is HFC Director of Admissions and Recruiting Tracy Perry.

“I want to extend a warm welcome to Angie to our Admissions and Recruitment team,” said Perry. “I am looking forward to working with her. Angie comes to HFC with experience in education – at the K-12 level, at the community college level, and at the university level. This, along with her positive attitude and enthusiasm, will make her an invaluable asset to the College.”

Higher education experience

Jones began her career at the K-12 level, where she worked as an elementary teacher, a paraprofessional, support specialist, and teacher’s aide for eight years. She taught at Eaton Academy in Eastpointe, University Prep Science & Math Elementary School in Detroit, and University Prep Art & Design Elementary School in Detroit.

“I enjoyed teaching young children. But I wanted to try something outside the classroom and go into more administrative work,” recalled Jones. “So I spoke to my counselor. I told her I was good at public speaking and mentoring. She told me to consider a career where I help people get into their chosen fields.”

Jones completed an internship in student engagement at the Royal Oak campus of Oakland Community College. For three years, she was a program assistant for the TRIO Upward Bound program at Wayne State University. Upward Bound is a program of instruction, tutoring, academic and career guidance, counseling, and residential life for high school students They are potential first-generation, college-bound students attending Detroit Public Schools who would like to go to college but may have difficulty attending due to academic need, lack of financial aid, or inadequate high school preparation. Upward Bound’s goal is to prepare students for high school graduation and college enrollment. Jones helped recruit and interview students for this program.

Her sister introduced her to HFC

Jones’ older sister Dainna earned an associate degree in arts from HFC. The elder sister influenced her younger sister to apply for the Recruiting position.

“When she was a student here, I attended some of her classes with her,” said Jones. “When I graduated from GCU, I checked to see if there were openings at HFC. Being familiar with the College helped.”

Jones looks forward to learning more.

“It’s about knowing the information. I’m looking forward to growing in my work and understanding the system better,” explained Jones.

Fellow HFC Admissions Recruiter Kristine Rouleau, the College’s most experienced admissions recruiter, has enjoyed working with Jones.

“Angie brings a relatable approach and enthusiasm to our team,” said Rouleau. “She has shown that she is ready to hit the ground running, making connections with prospective K-12 students and staff. Her professional and educational background, her firsthand knowledge of the communities we serve, and her warm personality make her a fantastic addition to the College. I'm excited to be working with her.”
