Council of World Cultures hosts “Many Passages of Time” film screening
The HFC Council of World Cultures presents Many Passages of Time: A Story of Indian Muslims in America with producer and director Dr. Arifa Javed on Thursday, November 2, at 11:00 a.m. via Zoom.
Many Passages of Time examines the daily lives of Indian-American Muslims and common misconceptions about Islam and ethnicity via conversational documentary interviews.
“As a standing committee at HFC, the CWC fosters global awareness and recognizes the various populations on campus,” said HFC Student Activities Director and CWC Chair Cassandra Fluker.
About the filmmaker
Javed is a professor of sociology at Eastern Michigan University who has produced and directed two previous films about the Indian-American experience:
- Essential Arrival: Michigan's Indian Immigrants in the 21st Century
- The Season in the Mist: A Story of Sikhs in America
Many Passages of Time debuted at the Great Lakes International Film Festival in 2022. Prior to teaching at EMU, she taught at the University of Michigan-Dearborn and Wayne State University.
“Dr. Javed’s work is expressive,” said Fluker. “HFC has hosted Dr. Javed’s films in the past. I appreciate the education each of her films bring. These films dispel myths about Indian Muslims living in America and are very insightful.”
After the screening, there will be a short Q&A session with Javed. This event is free and open to the public. Registration is requested but not required.
