Dr. Kalvin DaRonne Harvell and Dr. Carter G. Woodson

Dr. Kalvin DaRonne Harvell will give a lecture called “March THIRD: The Third Day of Our Preparation for Black History Month!” on Wednesday, March 2, at noon via Zoom.

Harvell – an HFC sociology professor and faculty advisor of the Black Male and QUEENS Focus Group – will explore the work of Dr. Carter G. Woodson (1875-1950), an African-American historian, journalist, and author. Woodson is the second African-American to earn a Ph.D. from Harvard University in Cambridge, MA. In fact, Woodson is the only known person whose parents were enslaved in the United States to obtain a Ph.D.

In 1915, Woodson founded the Association for the Study of African American and Life and History, an organization dedicated to studying African American history. Called the “Father of Black History,” Woodson launched “Negro History Week” in 1926, the precursor of Black History Month, which is celebrated throughout February.

“In the spirit of celebrating Black History Month all year long, this talk will explore the work of Dr. Woodson as instructive rather than philosophical,” said Harvell. “It will also provide practical steps in preparing to engage Black History Month in ways that protect the sacredness of the culture.”
