Dr. Veta Tucker will discuss “The Unbearable and Unending Costs of Jamestown” Feb. 22
Dr. Veta S. Tucker, retired director of the Kutsche Office of Local History at Grand Valley State University, will give a presentation called “The Unbearable and Unending Costs of Jamestown, Virginia's 1619 Purchase” via Zoom on Tuesday, Feb. 22, at 2:00 p.m. This is one of the Black History Month events HFC is hosting throughout the month of February.
This presentation provides a deep dive into selected sections of the landmark new historical work, The 1619 Project, an initiative developed in 2019 by Pulitzer Prize-winning investigative journalist Nikole Hannah-Jones of The New York Times, as well as numerous other African-American historians and journalists. The purpose of The 1619 Project is to “reframe the country's history by placing the consequences of slavery and the contributions of African-Americans at the very center of the United States’ national narrative.”
Participants will leave the presentation with a greater understanding of the ways in which the purchase of approximately 20 captive Africans by Jamestown, VA colonists in 1619 shaped the destiny of what would become America and persists in molding American society today.
This event is sponsored by the HFC African-American Association and the HFC Office of Student Activities.
