The HFC Writing Center will be online for the Fall 2021 semester, reopening Tuesday, Sept. 7 and remaining open through Saturday, Dec. 18.

The Writing Center at HFC offers support for any writer, at any level, at any stage of the writing process. It provides support as writers think through their goals, approaches, and products. Respondents in the Writing Center work with writers to provide them with a fuller understanding of the academic, social, and cultural effects of writing.

“The Writing Center is a valuable resource for students and faculty at HFC. Writing can be tough, and it’s not something you master in a single course or semester. In fact, writing is something we’re always working on. It’s about expressing ideas and connecting with an audience, and those aren’t fixed entities,” said HFC Director of the Writing Center Chelsea Lonsdale.

Lonsdale encourages students and faculty to make an appointment with the Writing Center this fall.

“Students use the Writing Center for so many reasons, from needing to format a nursing paper in APA to seeking reassurance that their voice ‘sounds’ academic on paper. We’re happy to help with all of that. We believe that everyone can benefit from working with an experienced reader and writer!” she said.

How it works

Writers are encouraged to meet with a respondent at any stage of the writing process, whether they are just getting started on an assignment or polishing a final draft. When making an appointment with the Writing Center, writers should include the assignment instructions, any writing they have completed , and their concerns or a brief explanation of what they need help with.

The Writing Center will not fix mistakes or edit documents, but they will help writers expand their ideas, identify areas for improvement, think about purpose, audience, and expectations, and provide strategies and resources that writers can use to improve their skills and confidence.

The Writing Center has a frequently updated LibGuide with handouts, slides, and links to external resources that students and faculty can access.
