Two HFC alumni take first place in Michigan Lineman’s Rodeo
Two HFC Power and Trades Pathways alumni, Nicholas Renner and Hunter James, placed first in the 27th Annual Michigan Lineman’s Rodeo, which was held at the DTE Training and Development Center in Westland in early August.
“It was a fun event. I enjoyed being able to compete in the rodeo. There was a lot of good competition. There were so many things to see and learn from so many linemen,” said Renner, of Highland, a 2019 HFC PTP alumnus.
Annual event tests linemen’s mettle
This competition, open for journeymen and apprentice linemen, is held annually to determine the fastest and most efficient pole-climbers. Their technical skills and safe work practices are showcased through a variety of challenges, such as a hurt man rescue, pole climb, and jumper change-out. Journeymen compete in three-person teams. Apprentices compete as individuals.
“It was cool, taking stuff from the field and putting it into a big event like this,” James, of Kingston, a 2020 HFC PTP alumnus.
“I’m really excited and proud of the accomplishments of my former students,” said former HFC PTP instructor and retired DTE lineman Dan Boylan, who attended the event.
Next up: October’s International Lineman’s Rodeo
According to Deborah Majeski, Manager, Workforce Development at DTE Energy, Renner and James have been invited to test their mettle against crews from around the world at the International Lineman’s Rodeo in Overland Park, KS Oct. 13-16. Linemen travel from as far as England, Ireland, Jamaica, and South Africa for the international competition.
“HFC’s PTP program is a pre-apprenticeship certificate program that provides fundamental skills and knowledge for in-demand jobs within the energy sectors,” said Cassandra Myers, HFC Workforce Development Program Manager.
“We’re excited to work with Henry Ford College to prepare future skilled trade workers,” said Majeski. “The PTP program helps prepare people for a successful career in this field.”
