HFC welcomes JJ the Mime Nov. 7

The HFC American Sign Language Club welcomes JJ the Mime Sunday, Nov. 7, from 4:00 to 6:00 p.m.
Born in Kansas City, MO, JJ (whose real name is James Jones) has been deaf since birth. He has limited hearing with a hearing aid. He discovered the art of pantomiming at any early age by watching The Red Skelton Show, which did not provide closed captions at the time. At the age of 10, JJ performed his first mime show in school.
JJ attended the National Technical Institute for the Deaf in Rochester, NY. By observing Emmy-winning French actor and mime artist Marcel Marceau (alias Bip the Clown), JJ greatly improved his craft. It was a dream come true for him to meet Marceau and Skelton.
Performing for 44 years
Since 1977, JJ has performed thousands of mime shows all over the nation. JJ incorporates street mime and improvisation, as well as audience participation, in his routine. In addition to his unforgettable shows, he also conducts workshops that teach expression, the art of mime, and the history of deaf culture.
In recent years, he has started performing internationally. For more than 15 years, JJ has been an instructor at Metropolitan Community College in his native Kansas City, where he teaches the art of mime to children and student interpreters.
This show is free and open to the public. You can also follow JJ on Facebook.
