President Kavalhuna with students, text reads: President's Town Hall Conversation

Dear HFC Community,

Because we are not on campus and I can’t interact with you in person, I have decided to host virtual Town Hall meetings as an opportunity to speak with you about matters that are on all of our minds.

As I was planning these meetings, George Floyd was killed in Minnesota. It became clear to me that we need to create a space to begin conversations about how our campus community can create a diverse environment of respect and civility that honors the lived experiences of African Americans and other people of color, while addressing the disparities in how they are often treated in our society.

This Thursday morning at 11:00 a.m., I will host a Zoom Town Hall panel discussion to address these issues. I will serve as the moderator of the panel. The panelists are members of the HFC community who have experience in addressing these issues in their own lives:

• Warren Harrison: HFC student and President of the HFC Engineering Club
• Munira Kassim: HFC Student Compliance and Conduct Supervisor/Student Title IX Coordinator
• Jade Lewis: HFC student and Secretary of the HFC African American Association
• Imad Nouri: HFC instructor and Licensed Professional Counselor
• Keambra Pierson: HFC Surgical Technology program Director and incoming Associate Dean, School of Business, Entrepreneurship, and Professional Development (BEPD)
• Mark Yancy: Success Navigator and Detroit Promise Coach

Congresswoman Debbie Dingell will also join us as a guest panelist. She will arrive partway through the event, due to another commitment.

How to submit your questions for the Town Hall panelists

Please submit your questions using this form. Submitting your questions in advance will help us organize the discussion. If you prefer, you will also have an opportunity to submit written questions through the Q&A feature during the meeting. We will probably not be able to get to all the questions, but we will get to as many as we can.
