Michael Ibrahim teaches new 12-week Arab Music Appreciation course

For the first time, HFC will offer MUS 154: Arab Music Appreciation for the 12-week session of the Winter 2020 Semester. The course will begin Tuesday, Feb. 4. MUS 154 will be held from 9:00 to 10:40 a.m. on Tuesdays and Thursdays in Rm. F-110 of the MacKenzie Fine Arts Center (Bldg. F).

National Arab Orchestra director teaches the class

Michael Ibrahim, the founder and music director of the National Arab Orchestra, will teach MUS 154.

Ibrahim is a dynamic conductor and a recognized innovator in the Arab music circuit. He has a unique approach to composition and improvisation. His fusion of Western and Arab music idioms has led to performances in concert halls and venues around the world, features on a number of recordings and film scores, and opportunities to share the stage with some of the most influential figures in Western and Arab music.

He hopes that through his performances and educational efforts, he can instill a wider appreciation for Arab music and its heritage.

MUS 154 description

MUS 154 highlights the basic principles of Arab music, while allowing students to gain a deeper understanding of the variations of Arab culture through its music. The goal of this class is provide students the opportunity to gain a basic knowledge of Arab music that will allow them to comprehend it and understand it.

The class includes the following:
* A basic introduction to various instruments of the Middle East
* A look at the art of improvisation in Arab music
* A familiarization with influential Arab musical pieces
* Exploration of cross-cultural influences in music between Western and Arabic culture
