CAPTION: HFC faculty and staff members affiliated with the Hawks' Nest and SAFE@HFC organizations proudly show off their checks for $1,000. These donations were made possible by the HFC Foundation and the Helen L. Kay Charitable Trust.

On Nov. 5, SAFE@HFC and the Hawks’ Nest each received $1,000 donations through the HFC Foundation Office and the Helen L. Kay Charitable Trust.

Representatives from both organizations within HFC were present, along with A. Reginald Best, Jr., HFC Vice President of Institutional Advancement; Dr. Daniel Herbst, HFC Vice President of Academic Affairs; and Shai James-Boyd, HFC asst. director, Advancement & Alumni Relations.

These donations are a direct result of the Foundation’s Year End Giving Campaign, which began at this event and will run through March 2019.

“These donations are invaluable. They create more opportunities for this office to partner with these two vital campus organizations more and help them achieve their goals,” said Best. “It reinforces the Foundation and the College’s Commitment to help HFC student achieve academic success.”

“Each year, the Foundation connects with faculty, staff, alumni, and community investors to glean financial support on the behalf of our students in order for them to be successful. This is why we exist – we are enhancing the mission of the College,” said James-Boyd. “HFC employees are encouraged to make a donation when they receive their appeal letter within the next few weeks. It is encouraging to see that HFC employees believe in the College’s mission wholeheartedly and are willing to contribute financially to the College. More importantly, their participation often inspires others to give.”

SAFE@HFC

SAFE@HFC is a campus organization consisting of faculty, staff, LGBTQ+ allies, and community members who are spreading awareness on campus, providing support, and connecting students and employees to resources. Its goal is to keep both HFC campuses safe and welcoming for everyone, regardless of sexual orientation.

“The SAFE@HFC Committee is exceptionally proud to accept this award of $1,000 from the HFC Foundation Office, as well as the Helen L. Kay Charitable Trust,” said SAFE@HFC chair Beth Preston. “SAFE@HFC’s mission has always been to strengthen equity and inclusion for our LGBTQ+ students, faculty, and staff. We continue to strive to raise awareness of LGBTQ+ issues across campus through education and advocacy while promoting inclusion and acceptance throughout all levels of the College. This monetary award means so very much to this committee because it will allow us to continue our efforts toward supporting a welcoming and inclusive college environment for all.”

The Hawks' Nest

The Hawks’ Nest is a student food pantry that provides supplemental food assistance to HFC students who are in need. If you are a student and you need food assistance, please visit the Hawks' Nest, located on the first floor of the Andrew A. Mazzara Administrative Services & Conference Center (ASCC) (Building L).

The Hawks' Nest works on the honors system; you are not required to document your needs. If you are a first-time visitor, please bring with you:
• Your HFC student ID card
• A copy of your current semester academic schedule (you must be enrolled in at least one credit hour during the current semester). This can be on paper or your mobile device.

Once you fill out an intake form, you will be registered for the academic year and will get a membership card that you can use to get food and supplies up to once a week (maximum four times per month).

“The Hawks’ Nest Student Food Pantry is extremely grateful to receive this $1,000 donation through the HFC Foundation Office and from the Helen L. Kay Charitable Trust,” said HFC Student Activities Associate Mandy Earl. “Our mission is to help fight food insecurity on the HFC campus. This generous donation will help us be able to provide food assistance to the 123 students currently using the pantry this semester. We would not be able to offer this much assistance to our students without the support of our very generous donors.”
