Singer Karen Newman Joins HFC's “Big Band, Bop and Pop” concert Jan. 28

Release Date
Henry Ford College Musicians collaborate with singer Karen Newman for “Big Band, Bop and Pop” concert Jan. 28.

Karen Newman, “the voice” of the Detroit Red Wings, will combine her talents with the HFC Big Band and Blue Fusion for the annual “Big Band, Bop and Pop” concert on Saturday, Jan. 28, 2017, at the Michael A. Guido Theater in the Ford Community & Performing Arts Center in Dearborn.

Award-winning musicians performing in this concert include young professional musicians, music educators and traditional-aged music students who enroll at HFC to continue their performance opportunities, according to Rick L. Goward, HFC director of Bands and the Rotary Club of Dearborn Concert chair.

This year they will be joined by Newman, a Detroit native and Oakland University alumna, who regularly performs the National Anthem at Red Wings home games at the Joe Louis Arena. She has toured with Michigan natives Kid Rock and Bob Seger. To date, she’s released five CDs.

Renowned for her annual Christmas concerts, Newman has been featured on two Christmas specials broadcast on WDIV-TV (Channel 4 in Detroit). Her holiday song “Christmas Eve on Woodward Avenue” – her tribute to Detroit – is a popular hit in the Detroit region that’s played every holiday season.

Additionally, she has appeared in numerous television commercials for local and national companies, as well as served as the celebrity spokeswoman for John Bowman Chevrolet, Evola Music, Discount Tire Co., Sargent Appliance, Hanson Windows, Diabetes Care Education Association (DCEA), St. John Providence Health Systems (SJPHS), and more. Newman works with numerous children’s and animal charities in the state of Michigan. She lives in Metro Detroit.

“We are thrilled to have a singer of Karen Newman’s caliber perform with the HFC Big Band and Blue Fusion for this fundraising event. Blue Fusion is HFC’s entertaining vocal jazz group that’ll be singing some tunes in a variety of styles accompanied by the Big Band. I’m very excited about this. I know that everyone involved will deliver a phenomenal show,” said Goward.

HFC will present this concert with special patron sponsorship by the Rotarians of the Rotary Club of Dearborn. College scholarships awarded to deserving students is an important commitment made annually by the Rotarians. This year, scholarship awards from $1,500 to $5,000 will be made to approximately 20 students currently attending the Dearborn Public Schools. This is the 100th year of the Rotary International Foundation.

Ticket prices range from $25 to $35. For those wishing to be on the Patron List in the “Big Band, Bop & Pop” program, they must make a monetary contribution of $125 or more. This will provide them with four reserved tickets. Every ticket sold helps fund a scholarship. Email Goward at rgoward@hfcc.edu if interested in becoming a patron.
