HFC Presents: Student Directed One Acts/Movement Macbeth 2012

Event Date

Production Information

Every spring for the past decade and a half, the HFCC Theatre Department has held a One-Act Festival. Traditionally, One-Act Festivals are used to showcase short works, 10-70 minutes in length, that explore unusual themes, content or styles. Sometimes they are simply shorter works by new or established authors. Comedies, dramas, tragedies and experimental works, are used to hone the skills of directors, designers, technicians and actors.

We have five works in this year’s festival, spread over two weekends. The first weekend contains four short comedies by student directors. The second weekend is an experimental adaptation of Shakespeare’s tragedy Macbeth, adapted and directed by theatre faculty and movement instructor, Gerry Dzuiblinski.

Performances are Thursdays through Sundays, June 14 through 24. Thursdays through Saturdays, curtain is at 8pm. Sundays, curtain is at 2pm. All seats are $7. Seating is onstage, in an intimate setting. Call 313.845.9817 or email gadzuiblinski@hfcc.edu for reservations or more information.

Caramels
By John Stern
Directed by student India Jackson

Is a quaint light-hearted 1930’s comedy about a nice ordinary family, whose father and breadwinner has decided to quit his job to eat caramels and read poetry all day long. How can his family get him to see the light? Perhaps they can’t, but perhaps the candies can. An ode to the power of sugar.

The Still Alarm
By George S. Kaufman
Produced by arrangement with Samuel French, Inc.
Directed by student Timothy Pollack

Is about a couple of upper class English buddies who just can’t motivate themselves to leave their hotel room, despite the fact that the hotel is burning down.

The Universal Language
By David Ives
Produced by arrangement with Dramatists Play Service
Directed by student Courtney Butterfield

Is about that dream come true: one language that will unite mankind in love and harmony forever…but it’s not usually that simple. Get the lesson?

Car Wash
By Louis Phillips
Produced by arrangement with Broadway Play Publishing, Inc.
Directed by student Samantha York

What if your car went in, but didn’t come out…and everybody working at the carwash was a manager, but nobody seems to be responsible? The whodunnit of the auto industry.

Thursday through Sunday, June 21-24.

Movement Macbeth
By William Shakespeare
Adapted for movement theatre production by Gerry Dzuiblinski, theatre faculty.
Musical score by Anthony Lai, music faculty.

With full technical production, and set in the 10th century, Shakespeare’s haunting masterpiece is retold completely without text in this experimental adaptation. Using multiple techniques from the rich traditions of movement and dance performance, this is Shakespeare as you have never seen him.
