HFC Student Council vice chair Richard Cremeans is looking forward to becoming the chair in the Fall 2025 semester.

“I’ve always been involved with extracurricular activities. I was walking around the Reuther Liberal Arts Building (K) after class one day and the Student Council was hosting an event. I asked what was going on and came to the next meeting. I’ve been going to meetings ever since,” recalled Cremeans, of Melvindale.

“Richard is an amazing student,” said HFC psychology instructor Alison Buchanan. “He has overcome a lot of adversity. He’s a hard-working individual who took two of my psychology courses. He always asks great questions and has stayed after class to talk about the material. He even shared a book by (renowned psychologist) Carl Jung last semester.”

Cremeans’ plans as chair of Student Council

Cremeans, a paramedic, spoke about his plans as the chair, succeeding Mariyah Saleh, who is graduating from HFC this summer.

“One of the biggest problems I see is the gap between the student body and the extracurricular programs HFC offers like Mindfulness Mondays, Wellness Wednesdays, and Test Taking Strategies workshops. These are excellent resources for students to utilize, but there’s nobody in the room. I plan to work to improve that,” he said.

Cremeans would like to also increase tutoring services for students, especially during the summer. He plans to work with the HFC faculty to incentivize tutoring to make it more accessible to students.

He also wants to build on the student wellness initiatives launched during the 2024-25 academic year, including:

“The Narcan initiative is great,” said Cremeans. “I’m proud of Phi Theta Kappa for getting it done. I hope they keep the Narcan training going even after I’m gone. This is our way of trying to fight the opioid epidemic from our area in Michigan.”

“I got more out of my education from HFC than I anticipated”

Born in Wyandotte, Cremeans is the youngest of two and the only son. He graduated from Melvindale High School and later earned certificates in Emergency Medical Services and Firefighting from the Wayne County Community College District. He has been a Paramedic Instructor at WC3D for the last 4-5 years.

“I never thought I’d become a teacher, but here I am,” he said. “Becoming an EMT has served as a steppingstone to go into the medical field, which was an unconscious decision on my part. Education and medicine are part of my life. I have a passionate curiosity for medicine and science and have been growing it. I see myself being responsible for patients at a high level and a leader in patient care and outcomes. I feel that’s the best way I can help other people.”

Cremeans came to HFC in the Fall 2023 semester, where he has been involved with Student Council and PTK. He will graduate at the end of 2025, earning his associate degree in psychology and a concentration in pre-med. Afterward, he will transfer to the University of Michigan-Dearborn, where he will continue to study psychology. Then he plans to enroll in medical school or a physician assistant program.

“HFC offered an academic atmosphere. I’ve gotten involved with a number of extracurricular activities. So far, it’s been what I’ve wanted it to be. I got more of out my education from HFC than I anticipated. I feel educated and am well-versed in a number of subjects.”

HFC Director of Student Activities Dr. Cassandra Fluker is the Student Council faculty advisor. She has worked closely with Cremeans during the 2024-25 academic year.

“I appreciate Richard for sharing what he learns in the classroom to enhance safety measures for the student body. He is strengthening his career growth and will become an outstanding healthcare professional,” said Fluker. “Richard has been elected the Student Council chair for the upcoming school year, and I look forward to his leadership as he continues to generate new ideas to better serve his peers.”
